Confused About What Chiropractic Is?

Each profession regardless if it’s a carpenter, a neurosurgeon, an electrician, a baker, a massage therapist or a farmer is a specialist in their “field of EXPERTISE”. If you have questions about a particular profession I would suggest you go directly to that particular profession and ask them what you are concerned about.

Would you go to a cardiologist and ask them questions about your eyes; he or she would recommend you go to an eye doctor? So why do people always seem to ask a medical practitioner or a physiotherapist questions about Chiropractic when 98% of them have little understanding of what Chiropractic is; and why should they, they are not trained in the “Art, Philosophy and Science of Chiropractic”.

Natural Healing and Healthy Living

Daniel David Palmer founded chiropractic in the year 1895 in Davenport Iowa U.S.A. It is the largest natural healthcare profession in the world. Chiropractic “does not” treat any disease and or prescribed drugs/medication and as such does not “CURE” any health problem you may have, the body does all the healing naturally when it has what it needs to function correctly. Avoiding symptom based drug therapy and other man made toxins is the first step to living a healthier lifestyle. Chiropractic is one important aspect of healthcare that works in harmony with nature by allowing the master control system of the body (neurological system) to function the way it was designed to function. Various “lifestyle” factors such as diet, stress management, work habits, environmental and man made toxins all play a role in the bodies ability to heal itself. One’s genetic predisposition must also be factored into the health equation. Sick and tired of being sick and tired, start learning about health and the role Chiropractic plays in the healthcare equation.

Chiropractic is one Simple Truth

I wrote a phrase down many years ago to illustrate how those who control information within our educational institutions throughout the world have manipulated the minds of humanity. “Complex reality is the result of being unaware of simple truths”. This maxim typically is associated with money and control where Healthcare, Energy and Religion are the top three players. Hiding various “TRUTHS” is the first step in the control process.

Chiropractic is one of those simple truths, which helps to solve a major part of the healthcare puzzle. Chiropractic assists the body by helping it place subluxated vertebral joints back into their correct position, the innate intelligence of the body is then able to restore nerve communication between the brain and all tissue cells of the body, which helps the body to work better.

As I have said earlier, Chiropractic does not cure or heal any health problem you may be experiencing, it is the body that does all the healing naturally. We have our own built in “NATURAL PHARMACY”. We only need to go back to “NATURE” and provide it with nature’s own healing herbs and foods, drink pure water and balance our lifestyle according to nature’s plan, and to do this it is a must to try and avoid as much as possible toxic man made synthetic chemicals. Lifestyle and Vertebral Misalignments (Vertebral joint subluxations)

Since 1989 Dr. Elkins has seen many patients benefit from correcting vertebral subluxations (spinal joint misalignments). Chiropractic typically uses their hands to apply a specific high velocity low force in the correct direction, which allows the body to realign the subluxated vertebrae (misaligned spinal joints). The body is then able to restore proper nerve flow (communication) between the brain and various parts of the body, resulting in better health. The actual “cause” of the spinal subluxation (vertebral joint misalignments) can be directly correlated to one’s “lifestyle”. Lifestyle can have a profoundly positive and or negative effect on one’s overall health. The major contributor to spinal joint and or other joint “SUBLUXATIONS” is when the musculature is not balanced, which causes the spinal and or other joints of the body to become misaligned to the point where they are blocked or “subluxated”. The spinal nerves can be irritated, which in turn have a negative effect on one’s overall health.

  • Approximately five percent (5%) of spinal subluxations can be attributed to accidents (auto, sports, work related).
  • Ninety five percent (95%) of spinal subluxations are the result of one’s musculature not having the same flexibility from one side to the other. This is usually directly related to ones lifestyle in regards to our work habits, sports habits and or sleeping habits. Eventually the muscles become tighter on one side resulting in spinal joint misalignments (subluxations). Chronic exposure to man made toxins can adversely effect the organs of the body, which in turn can have a direct adverse effect on the musculature. Chronic spinal joint misalignments can also be the byproduct of a body that is full of toxins. For more information see FAQ section (21b) and Lifestyle and Health Chart.

American Doctor of Chiropractic

Chiropractors trained in the U.S.A have a combined 4500 hours of classroom and clinical studies and at least 6 years of university education. On the average a Doctor of Chiropractic has 200 more hours of educational training than the general practitioner of medicine. Chiropractors do not prescribe drugs and or perform surgery. The statistical data comparing the safety of Chiropractic to Medicine is staggering. Based on the available data Chiropractic is by far a much safer preventative non- invasive method for maintaining a healthy body, and because of its safe and effective track record Chiropractic is the “largest natural healthcare” profession in the world. Even though efforts by the AMA (American Medical Association) in 1967 attempted to silence Chiropractic, Chiropractic has flourished simply because of its effectiveness. For more information see FAQ section (1), (6), (7), (17) and Chiropractic » Safety and Medical Safety.

Who Benefits from Chiropractic care?

In general most people (98%) benefit from Chiropractic. Chiropractors are trained to care for all age groups with little exception based on one’s overall clinical profile. Once it is determined based on clinical findings that Chiropractic care can be administered it is then important to select the appropriate adjusting technique which will better meet the needs of that patient.

Chiropractors are trained to care for the newborn baby, the elderly, those with prior musculoskeletal injuries and or acute injuries. For more information see FAQ section (3) and (5).

What is a Subluxation?

A subluxation is less than a dislocation (referring to any joint in the body). Spinal vertebrae also have joints for the purpose of “movement”.
A spinal subluxation consists of two of more spinal vertebra misaligned from their “normal position” to the point where certain clinical findings are manifested:

  • The surrounding musculature will begin to tighten, usually more on one side, which further increases the joint misalignment, which in turn increases muscle tightness. This is a protective mechanism for the spinal joints.
  • Next the person experiences reduced movement (restricted range of motion).
  • Inflammation is typically the byproduct of any joint misalignment in the body (subluxation). Why are the vertebral joints so important? Please read further.
  • The spinal nerves are very close to the spinal joints in that the spinal joints help to form approximately 50% of the tunnels where the 31 pairs of spinal nerves exit through traveling to all parts of your body. The surrounding spinal joint inflammation impairs vital nerve communication between the brain and other tissues/organs of the body. Restoring spinal joint alignment in most cases allows the body to reverse this process. Chiropractic together with proper stretching allows the body to restore proper nerve flow to the body faster. Always remember that the inflammatory process in and around spinal joints and other joints of the body are merely the by-product or symptom of the misaligned joints (95% of the cases). Once proper joint alignment is restored the inflammation dissipates on its own. For more information see FAQ sections (5a), (26) and Spinal Joints and Inflammation.

Sports and Chiropractic

Many professional and amateur athletes rely on Chiropractic care to enhance their performance. We all perform better in life when spinal subluxations are removed.

When an athlete wants to perform at his or her best it is very important they have there spinal vertebrae evaluated for subluxations. Spinal subluxations impair the ability of the neurological system to function correctly, which in turn has a negative effect on the athlete’s performance.

Below are “just a few” professional athletes who indorse Chiropractic care:

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger (athlete/entertainer/political figure)
  • Dan O’Brien (Athlete, 1996 Olympic World Champion in the decathlon)
  • Evander Holyfield (athlete, World Heavy Weight Boxing Champion)
  • Ivan Lendl (Athlete, Professional Tennis player)
  • Moscow Circus On Ice (entertainers)

Chiropractic for Babies and Adolescence

Many parents have their child’s teeth, eyes and ears checked on a regular basis for preventative measures while neglecting one of the most important parts of the body, the vertebrae of the spinal column. The spinal column’s main purpose is to protect the 31 pairs of branching nerves coming from the spinal cord. Vertebral subluxations (misaligned vertebral joints) can have an adverse affect on the communication between the brain and all organs of the body.

In the year 1987 a German Medical Journal of Manual Medicine published a scientific study where 1250 infants were examined 5-days after birth. 211 babies suffered from symptoms such as vomiting, drinking disorders, hyperactivity and sleep disorders.

Manual medicine found that 95% of these children had abnormalities of the spine. After chiropractic care all the babies became calm, the screaming stopped, and the muscles relaxed.

The Adjustment and Recovery Time

Everyone is different when it comes to sensitivity and or their tolerance to pain. A sensitive person will require a lower force technique to help the body to restore proper spinal joint alignment. In this case it will require more visits over a longer period of time to help the body to correct the vertebral misalignment (subluxation).

The length of time required to restore or correct spinal joint misalignments (subluxations) is typically directly proportional to:

  • How long the spinal subluxation complex has existed.
  • How much force can be administered during the Chiropractic adjustment (more force generally means more movement, which “typically means” a faster recovery).
  • How frequent the patient performs the Elkins Pulse Stretching Method. For more information see FAQ section (5), (9) and (18).

What to Expect After the Adjustment

Approximately 95% of my patients notice a positive change after the first visit. This positive change is typically related to a slight improvement in movement and pain reduction. The amount of positive change experienced after the first visit may or may not be related to how long the problem has existed. This also can be the case for organic problems. Approximately 75% of the patients regardless of the nature of the problem will experience muscle soreness and or some other type of symptom 8 to 24 hours after the Chiropractic adjustment or treatment has been administered and may last up to 2 to 3 days in most cases. Many people say this feeling is comparable to what an athlete feels after the first day of training. The muscles require a certain amount of time to re-adjust to the changes that have taken place. The Elkins Pulse Stretching method helps to speed up this transitional period as much as 3-times faster by restoring proper muscle balance.

Post Adjustment Reactions and Healing

Proper nerve flow to various organs and muscles including the vascular system creates many physiological changes within the body; a small amount of patients (normally less than 10%) may experience exacerbation of their initial complaint and or develop a totally new complaint, but typically these symptoms subside within 2 to 3 days. Remember the brain controls every part of the body not just the muscles. Toxins that may have been dormant for many years within both organs and muscles can be released into the circulatory system resulting in an exacerbation of the initial complaint and or the creation of a new complaint. Continued Chiropractic care in conjunction with a detoxification program generally helps in the healing process. Long-term psychological problems can also be a major contributor to a chronic vertebral subluxation complex (misaligned spinal joints) when considering the neurological connection between muscles and stress.

Pregnancy and Chiropractic

It is normal during the 9-month gestation period, particularly the last 4-months to have a Chiropractor evaluate the vertebral spine and pelvic region for subluxations (joint misalignments).
As the weight increases muscles and ligaments as well as the spinal and pelvic joint articulations are placed under more stress, which normally result in vertebral and pelvic subluxations, nerves are irritated resulting in possible birth complications. Chiropractic care is a small investment during the 9-months of fetal development both for the mother and the unborn baby. The birthing process not only is a traumatic event for the baby but also for the mother and as such the mother should also have her spine and other joints checked not long after giving birth. For more information see FAQ section (3).

Subluxations at and Before Birth

Both a natural vaginal birth and a cesarean birth (surgical birth through the abdomen) can cause subluxations between the occipital bone (lower back part of the skull) and the cervical spine (neck).

The rest of the spine is at risk as well including the pelvic region.

Children’s lifestyle and Chiropractic

How often do the children fall down during sports or just playing? What about the heavy bags kids carry back and forth from school? Chiropractors are trained to care for babies, small children and teenagers. Typically the “symptoms” of a spinal subluxation (misaligned spinal joints) for adults are the same as for a baby, smaller children and teenagers, the muscles are typically tighter on one side than the other. Since babies and very small children cannot speak verbally there are other “signs” you can look for that may indicate they are suffering from a vertebral subluxation (misaligned spinal joints). For more information see FAQ section (3) and (5b).

  • Crying frequently
  • Always cold
  • Poor breathing
  • Imbalance in the biomechanical movements from one side to the other or restricted movement on one side of the body. One leg or arm does not move as well as the other.
  • The head is always tilted to one side
  • They do not rotate their head equally to both sides
  • Tight musculature predominately on one side

First Chiropractic Visit for a Child

Each of us has our own personality and children are no exception, some are very sensitive and may not allow any physical contact with the Chiropractor during the first or second visit. Confidence must be established between the child and the doctor. There are many Chiropractic adjusting techniques or methods designed to accommodate the specific needs of the patient; Babies and small children are no exception to this rule.
For more information see FAQ section (3) and (5b).

Chiropractic and the Immune system

If you want to help your immune system to work better it is a good idea to have your vertebral column checked for subluxations (misaligned spinal joints). The neurological system has a profound effect on the immune system. During the 1990s the research department at Life University School of Chiropractic approached Emery University School of Medicine asking if they would be interested in conducting a research study to see if the vertebral subluxation complex (misaligned spinal joints) have any effect on the immune system. Another way to say this would be, “when spinal joints are misaligned the inflammation in and around the spinal joints can affect the various 31 pair of branching spinal nerves, which in turn may have a negative effect on the body’s “IMMUNE SYSTEM”. At first Emery University said no, basically laughing at the idea. Being certain that Chiropractic could never have any positive effect on the immune system Emery University decided to conduct the study in hopes of publishing the results in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association). One year passed while performing the research and it was found that all patients who received Chiropractic care their immune system were functioning much better than those who had not received Chiropractic care during this study. Shortly after the results had been ascertained at the end of 12-months, Emery University School of Medicine terminated the study because they were unwilling to publish such positive results in the Journal of the American Medical Association. One must conclude that Chiropractic indirectly helps the immune system by helping the neurological system to function better.

Accidents and Chiropractic

Many people suffer from spinal subluxations after having an auto accident. Once ligament damage and or fractures have been ruled out it is important to have your spinal vertebrae and or other joints checked by a Chiropractor. Whether it is an auto accident, sports accident or work related accident; millions of Americans choose Chiropractic as their solution for recovery.
